favorite things/life-update

I want to start posting here again mainly as a way to record the music and "stuff" I'm into because I have a) a terrible memory and b) too much time on my hands.

Music I've been into...

Been into a random assortment of French, dance and chill lately.

This song is kind of silly, but it reminds me of Summer. It makes me want to drive around with the windows down with bare shoulders and a cigarette in my hand. (sorry mom)

Bernache, "Your Name"

This is the solo project of Emma from Men I Trust. I think they are my favorite band at the moment. Sometimes I find myself watching and endless loop of their acoustic performances. They're beautiful.

Movies. I just watched 20th Century Women on Amazon Prime and it was one of the best films I've watched in quite some time. Emotional film with a great cast and wonderful soundtrack. Also I need all these white 70's mushroom lamps in my life.

Books. Right now I'm in the middle of reading Call Me by Your Name by AndrĂ© Aciman. I've seen the film adaptation about four, maybe five times now so safe to say I'm a fan. The book is even more stunning and reminds me of all the emotions, obsessiveness, possessiveness, fears and thrills that one experiences with their first love. This is my sixth book read so far for 2018, and quite possibly my favorite.

heeeeeey hello what's up

HEY THERE!!

Haven't been on here in a damn lifetime. Nobody reads this things so here are a few of my favorite photos I've shot recently for Kiwi Vintage. Fun Fact: I used to work here and play a lot of Ariel Pink on the speakers and spend all my money on mom jeans :)

spring? summer?

Just a few 35mm photos I've taken throughout this, summer? spring? Not sure but it's hot. I'm going to San Diego tomorrow and I've yet to pack, but no surprise there. Basically the plan for today is to leave work, meet up with some girl friends to workout at the gym, probably not get home until 9pm and then pack and most likely not get enough sleep. I'm going to keep this trip light and only pack one camera for once. I've been in a really good mood lately which has resulted in me picking back up my Nikon FM1. I always know when I'm the happiest because my film camera is usually attached to my hip during those days. I'll try to keep it that way.

beautiful spaces

In two months time I will be moving into my new apartment, totally solo. It's been a dream in the back of my mind for years to have my own little space all to myself, and I'm getting very excited. I've never been the type of person to stake out decorative space when sharing a living quarters with others. I'm not sure why that's been the case. I'll admit that I can be a little stubborn when collaborating, especially aesthetically. I'm excited to see what comes out of having this full creative freedom, and to develop my interior style. I've been hitting up antique shops and secondhand stores multiple times per week to find inspiration. Here's the color palette and some collected imagery found via Pinterest I'm using as source material.

spring cleaning

Spring cleaning isn’t something I normally acknowledge. My approach to cleaning is to wait until I’m forced to give the piles of dirty laundry and random paperwork my full attention with one large glass of Trader Joes red wine in hand. However, I’m starting to be more intentional with the items in my living space and I’m beginning to realize the powerful impact the seasonal purge can have on me emotionally. One thing I’ve noticed about myself is that I sometimes get caught up in a specific look or interior decor style and go on an Etsy shopping spree, only to later realize that it never really fit my lifestyle or my needs in the beginning.

For example, I recently bought a couple of white antique milk glass pieces to store my jewelry in, thinking that I wanted to slowly evolve my space into a more modern, Art Deco style, but then realized afterwards that they didn’t fit my lifestyle.  They ended up feeling sterile when placed next to the stack of my favorite well-loved books and film cameras, and I didn’t ever own enough jewelry to put them to their intended use.  Which made me realize that it’s OK to get rid of something, even if you love it aesthetically, if it just doesn’t work for you. As much as I appreciated the beauty of these pieces, they just didn’t feel like me.

After allowing myself to not feel guilty about parting with material objects that weren’t of service to my needs, I became more excited about spring cleaning and I already feel more like myself. I moved all of my furniture around (three, maybe four times) until it finally felt right and began purging all of the random crap that seems to find its way into my bedroom. I look forward to coming home and going into my room now. My books and objects, while fewer, bring me greater happiness than before because they are on proper display now.

hello march hello

Hello! Happy March! Had some ideas and things that I've been liking for the past month and wanted to share...

I've been re-reading one of my favorite books, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe. There's something about this novel that I don't ever grow tired of - it's ridiculous, dark, almost obnoxious at times, but even through the most nauseating encounters you can't help but wish you were there along for the ride. The scene where Wolfe describes the Prankster's introduction to The Beatles has to be one of the funniest, most horrifying pieces of literature I've ever read.

In terms of fashion...totally on board with the whole slip-on/loafers trend happening and I'm bound and determined to carry it into Spring. This is a big deal for me to get excited about a shoe style considering the majority of my shoes are boots and sneakers and neither of those are acceptable at my current desk job. So, woo! Progress! I want these(Gucci)loafers but not an actual purchase for me considering the cray price tag. Side-note: Is anyone else tired of the cut-out shoulder look? It seems to be making yet another comeback but I still can't get on board. The ruffle-y/prarie/blousey stuff though? I'm there.

I've been getting into running lately, like 2-3 times a week (Weeeiiird). It honestly started after a two week slump of feeling depressed. I decided to force myself to give the whole "exercise make you happy" mantra a try, and I ran, a lot. It actually worked. It's amazing what a little cardio can do for your self esteem, and it's also a good excuse to listen to more music and make yourself a workout playlist. Try it guys. I'm thinking about trying Pilates soon, we'll see!

I've become more interested in vintage furniture and housewares since working part-time at a vintage store for a few months when I was in-between jobs. I'm learning that it's ok not to have the place of my dreams at this point in my life and it's ok not to have my interior style completely pinpointed either. I'm finding simple pleasure in collecting pieces slowly over time and not committing to anything I'm not 100% in love with. This apartment totally hits it on the nail for me. Great balance of the clean, all white look while still feeling warm and cozy.

Looking forward to new albums like Future Islands (April 7th) and Alex G (May 19th)!!!

In other news I've been watching lots of Parks and Rec (probably to the point where it's a little unhealthy) and making homemade burritos. Also! About to dye my hair blonde after mulling it over for like 10+ years.

ok bye!!
